Annotation is an essential part of close reading. There are many different ways to tackle this task, but your overall goal should be to develop a conversation with the text that leads to deeper understanding and critical thinking. Your annotations may be in the form of sticky notes, highlights and margin notes, typed/handwritten notes on a separate piece of paper, or another method. No matter what, your annotations should always demonstrate thoughtful reflection on the text.
