Summer Reading 2023

Integrated and CP students should read one book.

Honors students should read two books.

Pre-AP and AP students can find their assigned books here. Complete summer work assignments will be emailed to them.

The expectation is that your choices are of a high school level and not previously read in or out of school (such as The Outsiders, Peak, etc.)

While Reading Over the Summer

You must respond to the following tasks for each book. These responses may be either handwritten or on a Google doc.

 CP classes

  • 3 passages that stood out to you and why (a solid paragraph for each)

  • 2 thoughts, reactions, questions, or connections (a solid paragraph for each)

  • 1 thing you liked or disliked about the book and why (a solid paragraph)

Honors classes

  • 5 passages that stood out to you and why (a solid paragraph for each)

  • 3 thoughts, reactions, questions, or connections (a solid paragraph for each)

  • 1 thing you liked or disliked about the book and why (a solid paragraph)

Upon Returning to School

  • Your responses will be collected on the third day of class and graded for thoughtfulness, thoroughness, and accuracy. This grade will appear in the practice category on PowerSchool.

  • You will write an in-class essay based on a prompt given to you by your teacher. You will be able to use your notes.

For more information/questions, please contact English Department Chair Tina Lesniak at tlesniak@shschools.com. This email will be checked periodically throughout the summer.
