From Turtles All The Way Down by John Green:
“I tried to smile and shake my head at the right times, but I was always a moment behind the rest of them. They laughed because something was funny; I laughed because they had” (Green 98).
This quote stood out because it shows Aza’s sense of disconnection with those around her. The words “a moment behind” highlight her struggle with OCD, because it often makes people feel detached from their peers and reality. Her trying to laugh with her friends instead of actually participating makes it clear that her mental health is not good at the moment and she needs to act normal to mask that sense of discomfort with her friends. It also shows the contrast between genuine and forced reactions, which serves as a metaphor for the bigger experience of living with mental health. It shows how those affected often feel left out from the world around them. The distance can make everyday interactions feel draining, which is shown through Aza’s experience.
